Benefits of Computers in the Classroom

Today, we have become a society that has become heavily dependent on technology to function at work, at home, and in other areas of our lives. The result of an increasing technological demand is that computers and other technological devices are having a tremendous impact on all areas of our daily lives. As well, computer technology is now being utilized in all areas of business. With a society that now extensively relies on computers, it just makes sense that computer technology will be used in the classroom. For students, the use of computers in the classroom has become an essential part of the curriculum.

The following describes the benefits of using computers in the classroom:

Career Preparation: The use of computers in the classroom helps students prepare for life after school. They will be prepared for a broad variety of careers that involve the use of computers. As well, they will not be at a disadvantage when competing for job positions as most employers today want their employees to have experience with computers. It is the job of educators to prepare students to be able to succeed in the job market and equipping them with knowledge of computers is essential to prepare them for a diverse and competitive marketplace. If a student does not have the proper computer training, their job prospects will be quite limited.

Excel in Studies: When using computers in the classroom, it can help students perform better, develop important skills such as word processing skills, critical thinking, problem solving skills, and fosters independent learning. It also allows for individualized attention that a teacher may not be able to provide when teaching a classroom full of students. As well, students receive instant feedback when they complete test and quizzes which motivates them to keep learning. Students will be able to learn by trial and error which promotes independent thinking.

Fun Learning: Using computers make learning more fun. When using the internet, students have access to volumes of information in many types of formats which is lacking in traditional textbooks. They can also engage in diverse projects that are very interesting such as showing an organ of the human body in 3D. When using computers in the classroom, lessons become fun and interesting instead of a boring chore. Computer technology provides information and experiences that books are not able to provide.

Computer technology is not only a part of most areas of our lives, it is also constantly changing. The result is a need to teach students about computers and computer technology so they are prepared to have a successful future. A student who does not know the essentials of using computers and computer parts such as networks, word processors, databases, operating systems, computer software, computer hardware, sound cards, laptop computer, desktop computer, computer memory, computer accessories, power supply, video cards, motherboards, and other components, will be at a serious disadvantage when they leave school. Using and understanding computer technology is essential beyond school and the classroom is where learning computers should begin.

Protecting and Saving Tigers in India

The Indian government is running a campaign to save the tigers. Tiger is a charismatic animal playing a pivotal role in the preservation of the ecosystem. It is at the apex of the food chain, a top predator that keeps the population of the wild in check. Presence of tiger in the forest indicates the well being of the forest. If the tigers go extinct, the whole ecosystem will collapse.

If tiger goes extinct, few other species can or will go extinct. Like when Dodos became extinct in Mauritius, a species of Acacia tree also became extinct. Three sub species of tiger are already extinct. Nearly 95 % of tiger population has been wiped out in the last century. Now the total world population of tigers in the wild is about 3500 with about 1411 tigers in India. Protecting one tiger is equal to protecting 100 SQ KM of wildlife habitat.

The tiger census is also questioned by experts for its accuracy as many believe that the tiger population is much lesser than the census quote. Poaching is the major cause for this. Poisoned goat as a bait is the oft used method. In a recent incident at Ranthambhore national park, a popular destination for tourists, Aldrin - a powerful pesticide was used to kill two 15-18 months old tiger cubs.

In this case, first information is that it was an act of vengeance by the villagers. Hearing this, Jungle Lore, a Mumbai base conservator group has swung in action. They have packed their bags and have moved to Ranthambhore in order to make efforts to educate the villagers.

Celebrities, sport star, politicians and film stars have been roped in to promote the campaign. The biggest threat to the Tiger population is the perception that Chinese men create demand for tiger body parts for aphrodisiacal purpose, hence the poaching. For a parallel effort, to curb poaching, the Indian govt. has recently approached the Chinese govt. to join India in its endeavor to monitor and close the smuggler's/ poacher's routes. In December 2009, China sentenced the man who had shot a rare tiger for 12 years plus fined him about 85,000 U.S. dollars.

With the aggressive campaign of the Indian govt., it is now easy to see bill boards, signage's asking people to increase their awareness and consequently help the Indian govt. in its objective. A side effect of this campaign is that school children are highly aware of it now and are discussing this issue at their homes.

You can watch these beautiful cats in their natural habitat in the following tiger reserves of India. Corbett National Park, Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambhore National Park, Panna National Park, Manas National Park, Sunderban National Park. The chances of spotting a tiger is highest in Bandhavgarh National Park.

Another species on the verge of extinct is Lion which is predominantly found in the Gir forest, in Saurashtra, Gujarat. However, my views on the Lions in India shall be the idea for another write up, which I should write soon enough.

A “Save it For Practice” Paintball Tip

Hey paintball fan, another tip about paintballing that you can take to the field and use right now. Have you ever noticed how some paintballers have all of the luck? Ever notice how they can hit their target from 75 feet away while you have trouble hitting things at 50 feet. Have you seen anyone who can hit his target while on the run? The point is that you have to know your limitations and the limitations of your equipment.

Lets say for example that you know that you and your favorite weapon (marker) are only accurate to about 50 feet away while in a game. You have a hard time hitting anything over 50 feet but you know that your marker will shoot fairly accurately out to about 75 feet or more. Then why is it that you have so much trouble when on the field of play beyond 50 feet? Doesn’t that bother you? It really bothers me. It’s because you don’t really know your limitations.

Before going out to a game work at getting better with your marker. A game is not the place to practice shooting beyond your limitations. Get out into the backyard or the firing range and practice shooting at different distances. Use a soda can, a handmade target or what ever you have available, but get out there and practice before you get into the heat of the competition. I guarantee that if you can hit you target while on the practice range your chances of hitting your target during competition increase dramatically.

If you want to be able to shoot while on the run guess what – that’s right practice. Get some of your gear on and get yourself out to the practice range and start running while shooting at your target. Make sure to use a larger target to start with and work your way down to something smaller as you become consistent. It doesn’t matter if you start with the side of the barn so long as you eventually set your target smaller and smaller as you go.

What about the old finger roll? If you haven’t practiced it on the range you shouldn’t practice it during a big game. Again get out to the practice range and work on the finger roll, or what ever it is that you need to practice. Keep practicing until you are confident that you can perform when you really need to. Do you think that the Marine sniper only practices when he goes into the woods with his orders in hand? That wouldn’t make any sense. The professional sniper practices and practices many hours before he ever goes out to find his target.

Not only does he practice a lot but he also knows his equipment. He’s trained to be able to take his weapon apart and put it back together in the dark and under a specific amount of time. That’s called being ready. And if you want to be better at paintball then that’s exactly what you have to do. Get out to the range and practice those things that you are weak at and work at getting better. I guarantee that the guy who can hit his target at long distances or while running didn’t just get there by hoping for it. He practiced it until he started getting good. Then and only then did he implement those things into his game.

5 Things to do With School or Church Youth Groups

5 Things to do with School or Church Youth Groups

Leaders of youth groups are always looking for something to do out of the ordinary. The following “field trips” should make you the most popular youth leader around. Just remember to get permission slips from parents even if the youth can drive their own cars. Some of these activities are just plain fun and some teach them to work together as a group or a team. Watch who emerges as leaders and definitely remember to take pictures to put in a scrapbook for the group.

1. Go to a movie and dinner – sounds simple but make it a learning activity by asking them to discuss certain aspects of the movie once you meet again. How did the movie make you feel? Did you feel the characters did the right thing? What did you enjoy most about the movie? What did you dislike about the movie? Now borrow a video recorder and have the kids re-enact the movie in their own way. This will teach them to work together and use their creativity.

2. Go Roller Skating or Ice Skating – many rinks hold group skates where they initiate different games and activities. This can be a fun activity for your group. You will find some of the kids don’t know how to skate so buddy them up with someone that does and have that kid teach them how to skate. The only way they get to participate is if they do this. You will find kids that don’t normally get along together very well will often become a little closer.

3. Do a Community Service Project – this not only helps your neighborhood but it also makes the kids feel good. Talk to your community leaders and see what needs to be done. A trash pick up in a park is a good project that only takes the cost of the garbage bags. Or go to a local nursing home and put on a program for them or play bingo with the residents. Nursing homes are always looking for someone to visit the residents. Make sure you take them out for lunch or dinner afterwards as a reward.

4. Go Paint balling – This is becoming an increasingly popular sport among both young and old. You will probably find that some of the kids know about playing paintball and some may even have their own equipment. It is best when dealing with kids to go to a professional paintball field or indoor court because kids that don’t have equipment can rent it there. Staff at a professional paintball court will instruct them on safety. Paintball does require a gun and shooting at people but make this a positive experience by splitting the kids into teams to learn how to strategize and build leaders.

5. Organize team sports – baseball is a good one where both sexes can play without getting hurt. Organize a softball team and practice once or twice a week then ask other youth groups to play a friendly game. You don’t need expensive equipment, just the basics) and instead of uniforms one team wears jeans and a red t-shirt and the other wears blue t-shirts.

These activities will help the kids learn to get along with others and will develop team building and leadership qualities.

Dodge Journey gets more efficient, less CO2, if you live in the UK

When the Dodge Journey debuted here in the U.S. market a couple of years ago, it looked decent from the outside. Sadly, the interior was pretty atrocious and the performance and fuel economy were mediocre at best. For 2010, Journey buyers can get up to 37.3 miles per gallon, combined, at least if they live in the UK. Meanwhile, Americans are stuck with Chrysler's unloved 2.4-liter I4 or the old 2.7-liter V6 with EPA numbers of 19/25 mpg or 16/24 mpg respectively.

How do the Brits do so well? Diesel of course. European-spec Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicles are available with diesel engines. The Journey gets a 2.0-liter turbodiesel I4 with a choice of 6-speed manual or Getrag dual clutch gearbox (DCT). It's possible to get a 2.4-liter gas engine, but almost no one buys that so it doesn't matter. For 2010, the manual transmission diesel drops CO2 emissions by 5 g/km and DCT is cut by 10 g/km. In both cases, the vehicle now drops into a lower tax band (based on CO2 emissions), which reduces registration fees for owners. Perhaps Fiat will one day allow Americans a chance at a diesel Journey – along with a new interior.

My First Car

Everyone has memories about the first car that they ever owned or that their parents, friends or loved ones gave them. For me, my first car was a 2001 Altima that my father bought for me in 2001 when I was in college.

There is a saying that beggars cannot be choosers, and trust me, I wasn't begging when my father announced that we were going to go to the Nissan dealership to look at cars for me. I was THRILLED. I was going to have my own car- my own vehicle that I could personalize and leave my stuff in and make my own. No more harassing my parents about driving me to my friends' houses or driving me to and from track practice or other various school meetings that I had. In retrospect, I think my parents were probably saving money by buying me a relatively inexpensive vehicle knowing that I was going several states away to college.

No parent can stomach the thought of their child wandering around without a means of transportation, at least not the parents on Long Island. I grew up in an upper middle class neighborhood and went to school with kids whose first cars were brand new BMWs, Lexuses and Infinities. Therefore, it really was not a huge deal for my Dad to go the conservative route and purchase an Altima for me. I was thrilled nonetheless. Suddenly the roles were changed, and I could choose to let my younger brother (who had recently acquired his driver's license but who was still without a vehicle) borrow my car. If I wanted to go for a run at one of the state parks, I didn't have to wait for an opportunity or a time when either of my parents were free to take me. Instead, I could simply jump in my car and go.

My little Nissan Altima had a silver exterior and was the “sporty edition”. This simply meant that it had a 6-cd changer stereo system ( which was then a big deal) and a few other little features like a power sunroof. What I had added on after the fact was a rear spoiler for the back of the car as well as tinted windows. I remember thinking how awesome my little car looked. I couldn't wait to get back to college so that I could personalize it with a few tasteful 'bumper stickers' that represented my college as well as my sport: cross country and track. You see, when I was growing up, because my father always drove a company car, we were never allowed to put anything personal on his car like bumper stickers; and even though my mother's car was her own car, she never liked the idea of having bumper stickers on a vehicle because she thought it looked “silly” and cluttered.

I still remember that little car. I remember asking the car sales woman whether or not my car stereo would come with a tape player in it. I also remember being really disappointed when she told me that most vehicles were being manufactured without tape players in them. How much time has changed the cars that we drive
